Jason Williams, commonly known as Revok, was born in 1997 in Riverside, California. Much of Revok's artistic inspiration derived from his childhood which was filled with his father's 60's music, skateboarding culture, and comic books. As he grew older, he funneled these influences with a new love with graffiti art. This soon immersed his life and has been his story ever since. Revok became one of the most notorious graffiti artists in the greater Los Angeles urban scene, often times finding himself in trouble with the law. Currently, Revok resides in Detroit, remaining a member of different world-knwon graffiti crews such as Seventh Letter, famous West coast collective of artists, and Mad Society Kings (MSK).

For this week's art activity students had to 'bomb' a legal wall/canvas with their name in bubble letters. Personally, I was very excited to try the art of graffiti as it is seen everywhere, especially in Los Angeles. To begin, I had to find a legal place to conduct my art. Luckily for me, my parents who are dentists were remodeling a few walls outside their office. They allowed me to paint on one of the walls as they were planning to repaint it in a few weeks anyways .To my surprise, it was not easy at all. I struggled in finding the the correct way to go about the whole thing. After watching a Youtube video on some techniques for hand drawing graffiti letters on paper, I decided to use one specific method. First, with the red spray paint can I created the letters very roughly and bubbly, with only a small space between the letters. This allowed for my piece to flow from letter to letter easily as seen in other works. Following this, I used the silver can to outline the letters to make my name pop out more. And lastly, for the final touch, I added a couple of silver dots and streaks to accent the piece and make it my own.
In conclusion, I was very happy with the final product. It is truly a form of art that took a lot of time and hard work to get it the way I wanted. Especially after watching the documentary 'Bomb It', my appreciation and respect for graffiti artists and their work has grown immensely. This was definitely my favorite activity to date. |
